Michael Ungar Dead: Canadian Skydiver Killed On Landing In Perris, California (VIDEO)

PERRIS, Calif. -- The experienced skydiver who may have been attempting a risky maneuver when he died on landing at a Southern California parachuting center has been identified as a Canadian man, the coroner's office said Wednesday.

It was the sixth skydiving death at the popular Southern California sport parachuting facility in the past 15 months.

Michael Ungar, 32, of Ontario, died Tuesday afternoon at Perris Valley Skydiving after landing hard at the Riverside County sport parachuting base about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles. His hometown was not immediately available.

Unger, who was injured during a difficult aerial maneuver, landed in a shallow pond at 2:01 p.m. and friends pulled him out of the water, the Riverside County coroner and Perris police said in a news release.

Ungar's parachute was open and he may have been attempting an aggressive "swooping" maneuver involving a high-speed dive to skim over the ground before landing.

Skydiving center manager Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld said Ungar sometimes worked as an instructor at Skydive Hollister on California's Central Coast. Ungar, who had 2,000 jumps to his credit, was visiting the Perris area and had rarely, if ever, jumped at the facility, Brodsky-Chenfeld said.

Ungar's parachute was open and he was circling as he neared the ground, witness Jack Nix of Fontana told the Riverside Press-Enterprise. But when he did not pull up or turn his body upright from parallel to the ground, Nix said he knew the skydiver was in trouble.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the air safety regulator only investigates such deaths to determine whether the parachute was packed properly by a certified packer.

Perris is regarded as one of the world's foremost facilities and has more than 140,000 jumps per year, Brodsky-Chenfeld said, which is about 5 percent of the 3 million jumps nationally in the United States.

It has been particularly difficult year at the facility.

In April, two skydivers collided, killing Jacob Jensen, 32, of Denmark. The other man survived critical injuries.

In March, two skydivers were killed when their parachutes deflated and they fell 300 feet.

In February, a 41-year-old Australian woman died after failing to open a backup chute.

In September 2010, a 51-year-old Russian man died after a solo jump. The man's body was not found until two months later by a farmer plowing a field. His parachutes had not been deployed.

There have been 14 deaths at the Perris Valley Airport since 2000.

Jumpers continued to skydive Tuesday following the accident.

Wade's winning shot lifts Heat over Bobcats 96-95

(AP) ? When Dwyane Wade was told he was going to take the winning shot against the Charlotte Bobcats, he nearly deferred to the hotter LeBron James.

Then Wade thought better of it.

"When (coach Erik Spoelstra) called it, I was shocked because this guy had it going on," Wade said, pointing to James. "I wasn't in the flow. I was about to say, 'Let LeBron run it.' Then I said, 'You know what, I'll do it.'"

And he did.

With James in the corner, Wade brought the ball up, drove to the left side and banked a 10-footer over Gerald Henderson with 2.9 seconds remaining Wednesday night to lift the Heat to a 96-95 victory over the pesky Bobcats to remain unbeaten at 3-0.

After Wade's shot gently fell through the net, he turned to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton seated courtside and imitated Newton's popular Superman touchdown celebration by pretending to rip open his shirt.

"It's a great homage to him," Wade said. "He was laughing. He was cracking up. But it was great respect to him. I wasn't trying to show nobody up. It's about how much respect we have for the athletes."

The Bobcats had a chance to steal one at the buzzer, but D.J. Augustin's 3-point attempt off a side inbounds play didn't fall and D.J. White's follow at the buzzer rolled off the rim as time expired.

Wade, who missed almost the entire third quarter with a bruised foot, only had 10 points on 5 of 13 shooting.

James led all scorers with 35 points, while Chris Bosh added 25. They combined for 35 second-half points to overcome a 60-45 halftime deficit.

Henderson led the Bobcats with 21 points, including a 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining to give the Bobcats the lead at 95-94. Augustin finished with 20 points, while center Boris Diaw turned in another terrific game with 16 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists.

James said he wasn't upset Wade got the last shot.

"I guess that's why they give him the big bucks," laughed James.

"Hey, they deserved to take my money today," Wade said. "But I earned my money toward the end."

Said James: "D-Wade said he finally earned it. He didn't play well tonight but, hey, nobody cares about what else you do after you hit a game-winner like that. That was a big shot by him."

But it was James who brought the Heat back, taking his team on his shoulders in the third quarter.

"I feel good and this is the best I've felt in a while," James said. "I'm back to having fun playing the game and doing what I do best and that's attacking and getting to the free throw line."

James was 9 for 9 from the foul line.

The Heat needed to dig deep after a sluggish first half in front of a crowd of 19,614 fans, the largest ever to see a Bobcats game at Time Warner Cable Arena.

They had plenty of help from the Bobcats, who turned the ball over 12 times on 25 third-quarter possessions.

"In the third quarter, we turned it over too many times," Bobcats coach Paul Silas said. "It got them back in the game. Once they got back in the game, we played tough. They're just too good."

Said Diaw: "I think they adjusted to what we did in the first half and made a conscious effort to be in the line of passes and really focusing on stealing the ball in the second half."

Still, it was an encouraging game for the young Bobcats, who are clearly in a rebuilding mode.

They seemed to feed off the crowd early on and certainly weren't intimidated by the Eastern Conference champions jumping out to an 11-0 lead. They led by as many as 16 points in the first half against a Heat team that hadn't trailed for more than 14 seconds in their first two games.

"I think we surprised by playing so aggressive," Diaw said. "And shots were falling and we were really committed defensively."

The Bobcats got plenty of open looks in the first half, using a pick-and-pop to free up center Diaw for 3-pointers from the top of the key. Augustin was fearless in the first half, showing no signs of a sprained ankle from Monday night by hitting on 3 of 4 3-pointers in the first half for 16 points as the Bobcats took a 60-45 lead into the locker room.

"In order for us to be successful, we're going to have to defense better than that," James said.

Even without an established big man, the Bobcats outrebounded the Heat 53-30.

The Heat looked out of sync and frustrated early on.

James got pickpocketed by Derrick Brown in the halfcourt set and later threw up an air ball ? one of two in the game ? on a turnaround jumper after posting up low against Corey Maggette.

The other two-thirds of Miami's Big Three also struggled, with Bosh getting rejected in the paint by rookie Bismack Biyombo and Wade hitting just 2 of 8 from the field.

In South Florida, local elected officials are much richer than the people they represent

Come campaign time, politicians love to portray themselves as men and women of the people. But most go home to lives that are different from those of the voters they represent. In many cases, far different.

Financial disclosure forms filed by South Florida's top elected officials show a group of state senators, state representatives, county commissioners, school board members and others who are wealthier than average folks.

Of 76 elected officials in Broward and Palm Beach counties whose state-required disclosures were examined by the Sun Sentinel, almost one in three is worth at least $1 million. The most recent Census Bureau estimate puts the median level of household assets in the U.S. at $70,000.

  • Florida State Capitol, Apalachee Pkwy, Tallahassee, FL 32301, USA

Even those elected officials who aren't in the millionaires' club are generally much better off than most. The median reported worth of South Florida's elected officials: $580,662, meaning half own assets worth more and half are worth less. Only seven of the 76 are worth less than $70,000.

That's no surprise to Adam Salater of Occupy Fort Lauderdale, the local spinoff of the Occupy Wall Street movement that argues against what participants see as excessive corporate power and unresponsive politicians.

"You talk about government of, by and for the people, and clearly they're not," Salater said. "We obviously have a political and economic elite in this country, and they run things for the benefit of those interests. The people in elected office are not a representation of the people."

"That's ridiculous," said state Rep. Irv Slosberg, D-Boca Raton ? net worth $7.4 million ? Palm Beach County's wealthiest state legislator.

Slosberg said the notion of being in the top slot meant a great deal to him ? until the 1996 death of his daughter Dori in a car crash. Since then, he said he hardly ever thinks about business and money.

And like other local elected officials who declare a net worth of at least $1 million, Slosberg said he votes without regard to how government policies might affect his personal well-being.

Several trends show up in the financial disclosure forms, in which public officials estimated their value of their assets at various times from Dec. 31, 2010 to Aug. 11:

---Countywide elected officials and School Board members in Palm Beach County are wealthier than their Broward counterparts.

In Palm Beach County, only Tax Collector Anne Gannon ($622,000) reported a worth of less than $1 million. Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, Supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher, Property Appraiser Gary Nikolits and Clerk of the Circuit Court Sharon Bock is each worth between $1.2 million and $1.8 million.

In Broward County, Clerk of the Circuit Court Howard Forman, Sheriff Al Lamberti, Property Appraiser Lori Parrish, and Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes all said they are worth less than $655,000.

Three of the seven Palm Beach County School Board members ? Monroe Benaim, Jennifer Prior Brown and Chuck Shaw ? declare assets of more than $1 million. Disclosures are available for only seven of nine Broward board members, all of whom said they are worth less than $750,000. The newest Broward School Board members, Katherine Leach and Donna Korn, were appointed after the summer deadline for filing disclosure statements.

---For county commissioners, the wealth is in Broward.

Three of the nine Broward commissioners ? Gunzburger, John Rodstrom and Barbara Sharief ? stated net assets of from $2.4 million to $8 million. The average net worth reported by the other six is $300,000.

In Palm Beach County, Commissioner Jess Santamaria is the only one who declared assets in the seven figures with a net worth of $8.6 million. The other six commissioners' average net worth is $369,600.

---State senators are much better off than representatives.

Four of the 10 state senators who represent parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties ? Democrats Gwen Margolis, Jeremy Ring, Nan Rich and Eleanor Sobel ? said they are worth more than $1 million. The average for the others is $500,800.

Seven of the 25 state representatives from the two counties are worth seven figures. State Reps. Lori Berman, Franklin Sands, Elaine Schwartz, Slosberg and Jim Waldman, all Democrats, and state Reps. Bill Hager and Patrick Rooney, both Republicans, estimated their wealth at between $1.1 million and $7.4 million. The average for the others is $223,300.

Report: Chinese activist charged with subversion (AP)

BEIJING ? A veteran Chinese activist has been charged with subversion, a human rights group said Saturday, after another dissident was jailed for nine years in a crackdown aimed at preventing Arab Spring-style democratic uprisings.

Chen Xi was arrested Nov. 29 and charged Friday in the southern province of Guizhou, the Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said. The Hong Kong-based center said Chen, who left prison in 2005 after serving a 10-year sentence, was accused of writing 30 essays that incited subversion.

A man who answered the phone at the Guiyang Intermediate People's Court said he had no information about the case.

On Friday, activist Chen Wei was sentenced to nine years, also on subversion charges.

Communist leaders launched a sweeping effort to crush dissent early this year in response to anonymous online calls urging Chinese to imitate protests that toppled governments in North Africa and the Middle East.

Human rights activists have criticized the ruling party's use of vague subversion laws to jail its critics. Authorities began using the subversion law against activists after repealing a widely criticized law on counterrevolutionary activities.

Chen Xi, 57, was active in the 1989 Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests and was sentenced to three years in prison, the Information Center said in a statement. It said he was jailed for 10 years in 1995 on charges of counterrevolutionary offenses.

After his release, Chen was the first activist to sign the Charter 08 manifesto calling for an end to one-party rule and advocating democratic reforms, according to the Information Center.

The charter's co-author, Liu Xiaobo, who also is imprisoned on subversion charges, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year for his pro-democracy activism.

Also this week, a government conference on politics and law called for a struggle against "hostile forces at home and abroad" and "illegal religious activities" next year, according to the Information Center, which is run by a mainland activist who lives in Hong Kong.

"Human rights conditions will continue to worsen next year," the Information Center said.

China's communist leadership was spooked early this year when online messages called for a Chinese "Jasmine Revolution," the name of the uprising in Tunisia.

Even though few outright demonstrators responded to the protest calls, China launched one of its broadest campaigns of repression in years, rounding up dozens of bloggers, lawyers and intellectuals. Most have since been released.

Others rounded up include Beijing activist Wang Lihong, who was sentenced to nine months in jail in September for staging a protest on behalf of other activists, and Yang Qiuyu, a Beijing activist who was sentenced to two years of re-education through labor.

Chen Wei's sentence appears to be the heaviest meted out in the crackdown, said Wang Songlian, a researcher with Chinese Human Rights Defenders, a Hong Kong-based advocacy group.

On Saturday, the European Union ambassador to Beijing, Markus Ederer, expressed concern about the sentence.

"The delegation of the European Union to China is deeply concerned by news of the disproportionate sentence handed down to democracy activist Chen Wei," Ederer said. "The EU firmly upholds freedom of expression as a universal human right and we encourage political debate rather than the use of criminal law as a means to resolve diverging political opinions."

Chen Wei, 42, previously served time for participating in the 1989 protests and was sentenced to five years in 1994 for "counterrevolutionary propaganda and incitement."

Amnesty International called for Chen Wei's release, saying his sentence was "clearly retaliation" for his criticism of the Communist Party.

Forecast favorable for most holiday travelers

Holiday travelers throughout most of the United States are getting the gift of good weather to help their travel plans this Christmas Eve.

On Sunday, Christmas Day, at least 99-percent of the country will not have any snowflakes in the air, AccuWeather reported.

"It doesn't get much quieter than this, this time of year," said Tom Kines, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.

But winter storm warnings in the southern Plains, rain and snow in Texas, and rain in the Pacific Northwest could snarl some travel plans in those areas.

Moderate to occasionally heavy snow will continue on Saturday to blanket parts of the southern Plains where winter storm warnings remain in effect, according to the National Weather Service.

The greatest accumulation is expected in far southeast New Mexico and areas west of Midland, Texas.

Along with the southern Plains, parts of Colorado, areas of the Northeast and the Great Lakes region will see a white Christmas with the snow that's already on the ground.

But most of the country will have no new snow on Sunday, with the exception of parts of the Northeast and Great Lakes region, which may see some snow showers. Rain is also expected in parts of the Southeast, reported AccuWeather.

"A large part of the country is going to be green or brown on Christmas Day," said Kines. "It stinks for Santa because he doesn't have the snow for his sleigh."

Kansas City, like most cities in the Midwest, is no exception. Temperatures there were forecast for 47 on Saturday and 48 on Sunday, under sunny skies.

Snowless Minneapolis
While snowless Christmases are not that unusual in Kansas City, they are more so for Minneapolis. Last year a winter storm 12 days before Christmas dumped 17 inches of snow on the city and caused the roof of the Metrodome, the Minnesota Viking's football stadium, to collapse.

This year, Minneapolis has no snow and will have temperatures in the high 30s over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

According to AccuWeather, El Paso, Texas, and Chicago are tied for seasonal snowfall so far with a total of 1.7 inches.

Video: Americans hit the road for holidays (on this page)

In a typical December, Chicago sees 8.5 inches of snow. To date this December, Chicago has seen the lowest amount of snow since 2003, according to Victor Murphy with the National Weather Service.

Drought-weary Texans are welcoming the snow and rain there. The worst one-year drought in the state's history sparked devastating wildfires, killed as many as half a billion trees, and prompted the most serious urban water use restrictions ever.

Story: Little to no snow this Christmas for northern US

Some of the most extreme water rationing will be lifted this weekend because of the rain. But Roland Ruiz, Vice President of the Edwards Aquifer Authority, which manages the underground reservoir, a main source of drinking water for millions of Texans, said the severe drought is still very much alive.

"Aquifer levels remain well below historic averages, and a return to severe restrictions is possible early in 2012," he said.

Texas needs 10 to 20 inches of rain in some areas just to return to normal levels for the year, and forecasters are not expecting anything close to that.

The National Weather Service's latest Seasonal Drought Outlook forecasts the drought to 'persist or intensify' across all but northeast Texas through March.

North Korean heir lauded as 'supreme commander' (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea vowed Saturday to uphold Kim Jong Il's son as "supreme commander" as the campaign to install the young man as the next leader of the socialist nation sped up one week after his father's death.

As the grieving continued for Kim Jong Il, state media also emphasized successor Kim Jong Un's bloodline and legacy in carrying out the Kim family claim to lead and protect the North Korean people.

Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was unveiled last year as his father's choice as successor, will be the third generation Kim to rule the country since its inception in 1948.

The call to rally behind Kim Jong Un, dubbed the "Great Successor" the day his father's death from a heart attack was announced, comes amid a dramatic show of grief across North Korea. The country is to remain in an official state of mourning until after Kim's funeral Wednesday and a memorial Thursday.

Footage from Associated Press Television News in the capital, Pyongyang, showed a throng of North Koreans climbing stairs and placing flowers below a portrait of Kim Jong Il. They placed wreaths neatly in a row as solemn music filled the air, and young uniformed soldiers, their heads shaved, bowed to the portrait with their eyes closed.

A sobbing Jong Myong Hui, a Pyongyang citizen taking a break from shoveling snow, told APTN that she came out voluntarily to "clear the way for Kim Jong Il's last journey."

For days, life in Pyongyang had come to a standstill, with shops and restaurants closed. Downtown Koryo Hotel, one of several in Pyongyang catering to foreigners, was nearly empty.

But there are signs that the country is beginning to move on.

"Streets, buses and the metro are all crowded with people going to their work. They are not giving way simply to sorrow," the Korean Central News Agency said of Pyongyang. "They are getting over the demise of their leader, promoted by a strong will to closely rally around respected Comrade Kim Jong Un."

The Rodong Sinmun, the mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party, said in an editorial Saturday that the country would uphold Kim Jong Un as "supreme commander" with vows made in "blood and tears" before Kim Jong Il's body.

North Korea was founded in 1948 by Kim Il Sung, the country's first and only president. He retains the title of "eternal president" long after his death in 1994.

His son, Kim Jong Il, ruled as chairman of the National Defense Commission, supreme commander of the Korean People's Army and general secretary of the Workers' Party.

Kim Jong Un was promoted to four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party in September 2010. He had been expected to assume a number of other key posts while being groomed to succeed his father.

North Korea has emphasized the family legacy during the succession movement for Kim Jong Un. State media invoked Kim Il Sung in declaring the people's support for the next leader, comparing the occasion to Kim Jong Il's ascension to supreme commander exactly 20 years ago Saturday.

Rodong Sinmun quoted Kim Il Sung as saying after his son's appointment to lead the military: "I firmly believe that the entire army will thoroughly implement any order of Supreme Commander Kim Jong Il and remain faithful to him."

Among the mourners Saturday was the youngest son of Unification Church founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon, who now serves as president of the South Korean-based church with long-standing ties to North Korea.

The Rev. Hyung-jin Moon helped carry a wreath to the main mourning site at Kim Il Sung Square in central Pyongyang. The American-born Moon had been in North Korea earlier in the month. The church has several business interests in North Korea.

The Korean peninsula has remained in a technical state of war since the Koreas' 1950-53 conflict, but two groups from South Korea had received permission from the South Korean government to visit the North to pay their respects, South Korea's Unification Ministry spokesman Choi Boh-seon said Saturday.

One group will be led by the widow of late former President Kim Dae-jung, who held a landmark summit with Kim Jong Il in 2000, and the other by the wife of a late businessman with ties to the North.

In South Korea, huge balloons were sent across the border loaded with socks ? a humanitarian gesture as North Koreans grapple with cold weather and shortages of fuel and heat. South Korean activists routinely send similar balloons containing anti-Pyongyang leaflets.

Citizens in Pyongyang, meanwhile, received a special gift from the late Kim Jong Il: loads of fish. State-run media said Kim was worried about the supply of fish in Pyongyang and had looked into the matter the day before he died.

Rodong Sinmun showed a photo of a woman covering her mouth in sadness and gratitude as she watched loads of herring and walleye pollack being distributed at a crowded grocery store where they were piled up in baskets.

'The Hobbit' movie trailer: what it tells us, what it leaves a mystery (VIDEO)

'The Hobbit' movie trailer is out, and it answers some questions while leaving others unclear. Did we just see Dol Guldur? Probably. What will Smaug look like? No idea.

For a video clip that's only about 153 seconds long, it's sure getting?lots of attention. And for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien or Peter Jackson ??well, it should.

The movie trailer (see below) for the long-awaited movie about an unexpected?journey arrived Wednesday. And it reveals a lot for those fans to chew?over, tantalizing footage from a film that's still a year away from?arrival in movie theaters.

For now, here's a discussion of three of the more interesting bits.

1. How non-"Hobbit" material fits in

Mr. Jackson and the team behind the movie seized the opportunity to?stretch a single book by Mr. Tolkien into two cinematic parts. In doing so, the director is bringing in some?material that was outside Tolkein's book, but is a part of the broader Tolkien canon ? appendices and other works that explain what was going on in other parts of Middle Earth during the events of "The Hobbit."

But it has been a mystery as to how he would accomplish this. The trailer provides clues.?

For one, a key character seen in the trailer is?the elf Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), who figured prominently the "The?Lord of the Rings" trilogy, but isn't in Tolkien's "Hobbit" book at all. Her presence in the film points to the inclusion of the so-called White Council and?its battle of good versus evil.

In the book, the wizard Gandalf disappears to participate in those events. Now we'll get to see?what happened. Or at least Jackson's rendition of it.

The trailer might also have given viewers their first glimpse of Dol Guldur, the hiding place of the spirit of Sauron before he returns to rebuild Barad-d?r in Mordor in "The Lord of the Rings."

2. The song

The trailer is visually rich but also lets listeners hear a key?soundtrack element: A plaintive song the dwarves sing as they prepare?for their eastward march through the Misty Mountains to reclaim their?heritage.

Did the movie makers pick the right tune?

The answer may lie?in the ear of each listener, but it seems suitably dignified,?mysterious, and wistful. The somber mood as the dwarves sing also may?hint that Jackson is playing this movie very much as a prequel to "The?Lord of the Rings" rather than just a children's tale of dragons and?treasure and magic.

3. Fully drawn characters

We get a good look at the "new" (younger) Bilbo Baggins of "The?Hobbit," played by Martin Freeman. We also see the team of dwarves?whom Bilbo will join, thanks to Gandalf's maneuvering.

Many viewers of?the trailer are pleased by the appearances. But the trailer raises questions.

Does the leader of the?party, Thorin Oakenshield, look too man-like? Maybe it's just that the trailer?focuses on him in the saddle, with an upward-looking shot that makes
him appear tall.

We hear some of the expected banter between Gandalf and Bilbo:?"You will have a tale or two to tell when you come back," Gandalf?promises with characteristic understatement.

"You will promise that I will come back?," Bilbo asks.

"No."

Along with what we do learn is what we don't. This movie trailer is?about part one of "The Hobbit," and while it may offer a glimpse of?trolls and the dwarves, viewers won't get any teasing looks at story?elements like eagles, barrels, or the highly anticipated Smaug the dragon.

Finnish police find Patriot missiles in cargo (AP)

HELSINKI ? Finnish police say they are investigating a cargo of 69 Patriot surface-to-air missiles found in a ship destined for the Chinese port of Shanghai.

The National Bureau of Investigation says the British-flagged M/S Thor Liberty arrived from northern Germany on Dec. 15 and docked in a Finnish port to load up with anchor chains.

The bureau said Wednesday that the vessel was held in port because it also contained materials for the manufacture of explosives.

It said police and customs officials are investigating whether the shipment broke Finnish laws on weapons trading.

Obama goes Christmas shopping (AP)

ALEXANDRIA, Va. ? Home alone at the White House, President Barack Obama headed on an impromptu Christmas shopping trip Wednesday with first dog Bo, searching for some holiday cheer despite the latest stalemate with Congress.

The president's wife and daughters already are on the family's annual Hawaii vacation, leaving him behind to negotiate with Republican lawmakers to keep payroll taxes from going up in the new year. So Obama squeezed in time after calls with congressional leaders to hit a PetSmart and a Best Buy in this Virginia suburb before picking up pizza for lunch.

Along the way he wished Merry Christmas and happy holidays to dozens of thrilled bystanders in this politically important state less than a year out from the 2012 presidential election, and days from Christmas and an end-of-year deadline to reach a deal with Congress or see taxes rise and unemployment benefits expire on millions of Americans.

At the pet store the president bought Bo a toy bone and a bag of treats, as the presidential pup played with a poodle puppy named Cinnamon.

"OK, Bo, don't get too personal" Obama admonished at one point as the two dogs sniffed each other in excitement.

From there Obama headed to Best Buy to shop for his daughters, Malia, 13, and Sasha, 10. He purchased two $50 iTunes gift cards and two games ? the Sims 3: Pets and Just Dance 3 for the Wii.

"If you're wondering ? Just Dance for the Wii," the president informed reporters. "The girls beat me every time on these various dance games. So. You'll never get a picture of me doing it because I get graded F every time."

Obama spent over $190 and put it on a credit card, first remarking to store employees, "It'll be really embarrassing if it doesn't go through." But there was no problem.

Then it was time for lunch. The president hit Del Ray Pizzeria and picked up three pies to go, stopping on the way out to greet screaming onlookers, dispense holiday wishes and pose for pictures with kids. "I love you!" someone screeched.

But even among the upbeat holiday crowds Obama encountered a bit of friendly criticism over a Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline he has delayed, creating a jobs issue for Capitol Hill Republicans.

"I just said I disagreed with him on the pipeline but I love what he's doing for the country otherwise," John Passacantando, 50, of Alexandria said after meeting Obama.

The last group of onlookers Obama met invited him to their office holiday party at their Internet development company. But the president regretfully declined.

It was time for him to head back to the White House.

Google, KKR invest in California solar project (AP)

Online search and advertising giant Google is teaming with investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. to develop four solar energy farms serving the Sacramento Municipal Utility District in California.

Google, Inc. said Tuesday on its Green Blog that it will spend $94 million on the projects. They also will receive equity from SunTap Energy RE LLC, a venture formed by KKR to invest in U.S. solar projects.

The projects are expected to provide electricity to power more than 13,000 average U.S. homes. Electricity produced by three of the projects is contracted for 20 years with the utility district, Google said.

Construction on three of the four projects will be complete early next year, and the fourth will come on line later in the year.

KKR said SunTap represents its first U.S. renewable energy investment. It also has invested in a French wind farm operator and a Spanish solar energy company.

Google said it has invested more than $915 million in clean energy projects, including $800 million this year.

Google has invested in wind farms in North Dakota, California and Oregon, solar projects in California and Germany, and a project off the East coast of the U.S. meant to help make offshore wind farms possible.

Google has said it is disappointed that it can't buy renewable electricity for its power-hungry data centers so it is investing to help renewable power expand in scale.

Reducing the environmental impact of its business has long been a focus of co-founder and CEO Larry Page. The company says that since 2007, it has completely offset its emissions of greenhouse gases by paying for projects that remove those gases from the atmosphere.

In September, Google announced it would set up a $75 million fund to help local installers offer special financing deals to homeowners who want to put solar panels on their roofs. In June, the company announced a $280 million deal with installer SolarCity to help it offer similar deals.

Google's Sacramento deal represents its first U.S. investment in a large-scale solar project that generates energy for a grid, rather than individual rooftops

Prices of solar panels have fallen dramatically over the last year as more solar manufacturing plants have been built, raw material costs have fallen, and renewable energy subsidies in Europe, solar's biggest market, have dried up.

This has been a boon for installers, utilities and homeowners. Solar installations are on pace to double in the U.S. this year for the second year in a row. MidAmerican Energy, the Iowa utility owned by Berkshire Hathaway, announced investments in two enormous solar farms this month, one in Arizona and one in California.

But the low panel prices have eroded the profits of panel makers.

First Solar, the nation's largest solar company, has cut earnings and revenue estimates for 2011. The company, based in Tempe, Ariz., expects to report charges of 85 cents per share related to a series of cost-cutting moves this year, including layoffs of about 100 people.

In September, California solar panel maker Solyndra LLC, which received a $528 million federal loan and was touted by the Obama administration as a "green jobs" creator, filed for bankruptcy court protection, citing low panel prices.

GOP candidates criticize judicial system (AP)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ? Newt Gingrich is promoting his plan to abolish left-leaning courts, and Rick Perry wants to do away with lifetime appointments for judges.

The Republicans seeking their party's presidential nomination uniformly criticized "judicial activism" at Thursday night's debate, and they pledged to appoint conservative judges.

Michele Bachmann says that both the White House and Congress have failed to keep judges in check and that the people need to take back power.

However, Ron Paul says that Gingrich's suggestion to subpoena judges before Congress or abolish whole courts goes too far.

Teen girls send, receive 4K texts a month

Nielsen

By Athima Chansanchai

A recent report shows teens who text and surf the Web using their smartphones have tripled their data usage in the past year, with young women the most likely to let their fingers do the talking, sending and receiving nearly 4,000 messages a month on average.

Nielsen's latest analysis?reveals the ascendancy of teens into what the tracking firm labels the "mobile Data Tsunami,"??or the rapid growth of data consumption by U.S. smartphone users with the emergence of unlimited plans amid a social media-addicted society. Teens hold a formidable place as "the leading message senders," in these polls of more than 65,000 mobile subscribers who volunteered for the studies and ponied up their monthly cellphone bills.

The latest information about teens in particular give weight to anecdotal evidence of heavy texting. (For example, my friends have told me more than a few times about how rampant text messaging is among their early teen children, from dawn to well after dusk.) In the third quarter of 2011, teens ages 13-17 used an average of 320 MB of data per month, which is an increase of 256 percent from the same point last year ? growing at a rate faster than any other age group.?

Nielsen

While Nielsen finds much of this comes at the hands of teen boys, who took in 382 MB per month (vs. their female counterparts' 266 MB), teen girls are on top when it comes to messaging, with 3,952 messages per month vs. boys' 2,815. (The average per teen is 3,417.)

A year ago, Pew came out with a report showing a similar preoccupation with texting, finding that the average teen sends and receives 3,339 texts a month.

Besides messaging, teens are also consuming data on their phones for Internet browsing, social networking, email, app downloads, and app use.

What they aren't using their phones for: making voice calls. "Voice usage has declined the most among this group, from an average of 685 minutes to 572 minutes. When surveyed, the top three reasons teens said that they prefer messaging to calling was because it is faster (22 percent), easier (21 percent), and more fun (18 percent)."

Given the distraction phones ? especially smartphones???are to this particular age group, safety advocates have laid on the pressure to curb teens from texting while driving, and there are plenty of apps out there that can help parents prevent the two from mixing. But in the past, teens have pegged drinking and driving as much more dangerous than texting and driving.

(AP) ? Russian officials indicated Thursday that their country may offer more than the $10 billion it already has promised the International Monetary Fund to help support the struggling euro currency.

Speaking at a news conference with EU President Herman van Rompuy and European Commission head Jose Manuel Barroso, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said: "We are ready to invest the necessary financial means to back the EU and the eurozone. We are ready to consider other measures of support."

He didn't elaborate, but Russian officials have said their country would offer up to $10 billion to the IMF to help support the euro. And Arkady Dvorkovich, a Medvedev economic adviser, indicated Thursday the total may be greater because Russia has a big economic stake in the EU, where a debt crisis is dragging down economies and the 17-nation eurozone.

"We are ready to contribute our part via the IMF. We are committed to do it. Ten billion dollars is the minimum commitment," Dvorkovich told journalists reporting from the 28th EU-Russia summit in Brussels, where other major issues included visa liberalization and alleged fraud during Russia's parliamentary election last week.

Last week, EU governments said they would give the IMF euro200 million ($264 billion), which in turn could help out the eurozone. The fund also expects other nations to participate in the rescue fund.

Medvedev said it is in Russia's interest to assist its largest trade partner overcome the economic crisis.

Russia exports more to the EU than to any other market, and Russia is the EU's third-largest trading partner. Total trade amounts to euro245 billion ($318 billion). Russia also is the EU's most important source of energy imports, accounting for nearly a quarter of its natural gas consumption and 30 percent of its oil.

Medvedev said that 41 percent of his country's foreign currency reserves are denominated in euros.

"Russia is interested in the EU's preservation as a powerful economic and political force," Medvedev said. "We have advantageous ties, and for us united Europe is very important."

Van Rompuy, meanwhile, acknowledged that Russia and the EU "are strongly interdependent." Van Rompuy was hosting Medvedev for the twice-yearly meeting.

The summit came as the World Trade Organization was set to approve Russia's long-delayed membership on Friday. Russia ? the largest economy still outside the WTO ? has been trying to join for 18 years. A Swiss-brokered deal with Georgia last month cleared the last major hurdle for Russia.

Medvedev thanked the EU for its support of Russia's candidacy, saying: "It will give a strong impulse to our cooperation."

Van Rompuy said: "Russian WTO accession is a major achievement (which) opens a myriad of possibilities for trade and growth."

Medvedev dismissed complaints about the conduct of Russia's Dec. 4 legislative elections. On Wednesday, European Parliament speaker Jerzy Buzek called for new free-and-fair elections and a probe into reports of fraud and intimidation at Russian polling stations.

"It means nothing to me," Medvedev said.

The EU has avoided overt criticism of the elections, which have sparked massive anti-government protests in Moscow and other Russian cities.

After years of negotiations, the two sides also launched a set of joint steps that will lead to visa-free travel for Russian citizens ? a long-standing goal in relations. The measures include the introduction of biometric passports, as well as improved border management to combat transnational crime, terrorism and corruption.

Officials said Syria and Iran were also discussed. Russia has blocked a bid by the United States and EU nations to impose sanctions against Syria, where a government crackdown on dissidents has killed thousands of people. Russia opposes any further moves against Iran, whose nuclear program worries the West.

Ohio boy who weighed 200 pounds to live with uncle (AP)

CLEVELAND ? A boy removed from his mother's custody over health concerns when his weight ballooned to more than 200 pounds will be taken from foster care and placed in the custody of an uncle, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Judge John Hoffman also said the boy, who celebrated his 9th birthday Wednesday but didn't appear in court, would be allowed a weeklong visit with his mother for Christmas. His name was withheld by Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court.

The mother left court without commenting, but the placement with her brother living in the Columbus area had been accepted by all sides before it was announced during a brief court hearing.

The court-appointed attorney representing the boy's interests, John Lawson, said he was sure the youngster would be happy with the agreement.

"This is only an interim plan because the real goal of everybody here is to get him back in his home with his mother and his sibling," a brother, Lawson said.

"He's a very smart boy and I think he's got goals about himself," Lawson said, including losing weight.

While in foster care, the boy's weight dropped from about 200 pounds to 192.

Mary Louise Madigan, speaking for the Cuyahoga County Children and Family Services agency that sought foster care for the boy over weight-related health issues, said having the uncle caring for the boy was part of the county's goal of getting him to a healthy weight and back with his mother.

"He's in a least restrictive placement with a family member and I think that's what the court was looking at," she said.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio joined the case on the boy's behalf and said he should be with his family.

"We think it's a fundamental liberty for a child to be brought up in his home among family and friends," said the ACLU's James Hardiman.

Taking a child from the home over weight issues could set a bad precedent, he said.

"We're concerned that if this were to establish a precedent that it would be a pretty dangerous precedent. So we take it as a basic fundamental civil liberties issue," Hardiman said.
