Chinese New Year Lo Hei Tradition in Singapore

Still in Chinese New Year mood (it's celebrated for 15 days,by the way), I bought a set of Yu Sheng from Sakae Sushi earlier. At first they said need to wait for 2 hours to get it (because I didn't make order earlier, I only dropped by the shop at Northpoint Mall and ordered there). Luckily, I only need to wait for 1 hour.

Talking about Chinese New Year tradition, here in Singapore is different from Indonesia. First time I celebrated CNY in Singapore, I was shocked to know the Lo Hei tradition existed. We never found this in Indonesia. I just knew that it's normal in Singapore and Malaysia (I think in Malaysia it's called Lou Sang).

Eventhough many people do Lo Hei at different days during CNY, it's believed seventh day of CNY is the exact day Lo Hei should be done. Why on 7th day? Because it's everyone's birthday, according to Chinese tradition.

Ok, so what you need to do during Lo Hei? There's this thing called Yu Sheng (I mentioned that earlier), a plate of different items which you need to toss it up high in the air (the higher the better, I heard). Below is how Yu Sheng looks like.

If you notice, there are common items included in the Yu Sheng. Each of these items have its own special meaning. And you need to add them in order and with sayings.

Below is the summary of the steps, meanings and sayings:

1. In the beginning, you say Gong Xi Fa Cai ("congratulations to your wealth"), Wan Shi Ru Yi ("May all your wishes come true")

2. Add fish, it symbolizes abundance or excess for the year. You say: Nian Nian You Yu and You Yu You Sheng.

3. Add pomelo over the fish, means adding luck. You say: Da Ji Da Li.

4. Add pepper, means to attract more money. You say: ?Zhao Cai Jin Bao.

5. Pour oil in circle motion, means multiply your profit 10,000 times and attracts money from all directions. You say: Yi Ben Wan Li and Cai Yuan Guang Jin.

6. Add carrots to the fish, adds good luck. You say: Hong Yun Dang Tou.

7. Add shredded green radish on to the fish, means eternal youth. You say: Qing Chun Chang Zhu.

8. Then white radish, for prosperity in business and promotion at work. You say: Feng Sheng Shui Qi and Bu Bu Gao Sheng.

9. Next peanut crumbs, symbolizes longevity and household filled with gold and silver. You say: Jin Yin Man Wu.

10. Add sesame seeds, for flourishing business. You say: Sheng Yi Xing Long.

11. Last, deep fried flour crisps (pillow shape), means the whole floor filled with gold. You say: Pian Di Huang Jin.

12. Then toss them with saying Lo Hei (in Cantonese it means "tossing luck"). Usually, people will say their wishing too during tossing.

And here it is my Yu Sheng for the day before tossing.

After tossed. Yummy ... ^_^ (maybe my photo doesn't look appealing, but it tastes good in real life).

For all friends who celebrate Chinese New Year, Gong Xi Fa Cai. May this year a better year for all of us and it's filled with happiness and luck.
