Article Marketing Strategy #1 - Write To Your Target Audience ...

When you write your articles directly to your target audience, your article writing becomes 10 times more effective.

Let's start by answering the question:

What is a target audience?

Your target audience is the set of people that want and should be reading your content. They are the people that will most likely end up buying from you. They are the people that will connect with you best.

So, for example. Let's say you write a blog about being a new mother. Obviously, your content is not for business men. Right?

Your target audience are women that are pregnant and new mothers. Maybe your blog is for new mothers that are starting out later... like in their 40s. Well, that's a pretty different target audience than a young teen mom. Maybe your content is the same, and maybe it's not.

Knowing who your target audience is will help you to write better, more valuable content. The more targeted your message is to your audience, the more your readers will connect with you... the more they will learn to like and trust you... and once you have credibility with your visitor, you can make sales offers to them that you know they are interested in buying.

A Target Audience Example

Let me give you a specific example on how defining your target audience will improve your article marketing strategy.

I have a blog designed for people looking for simple sewing projects. Now, when I first launched this blog, years ago, I targeted anyone who wanted to sew. Well, that's kinda right... but my blog wasn't getting very much traction and virtually no sales conversions.

This is because I didn't identify my target audience.

So, I created a persona of the person most likely to find value in my site.

I imagine my ideal visitor to be a woman in her late 40s. She's friendly and smiles a lot. I named her Sally Sew-er.

She has grown children.

She loves to sew, but she really wants easy projects that she can do on the weekends.

She could be a young grandmother that wants to sew a gift for her new grand-baby.

An amazing thing happens when you put a face to the person that you want to visit your site. They become real.

It is so easy to have a conversation with a real person. Stop writing articles to put words on paper... write directly to the person who is reading your article. Use the word "you" throughout your copy. Pretend that you know this person.

Your writing will become personal... the reader will feel connected to you... and you will gain followers and leads so much easier than if you just write articles to sell.

So now what?

Take 5 minutes and write down 5 characteristics that your target audience would have. This is the person that will most likely be interested in the product you ultimately want to sell.

Give this person a name. What does he/she look like? How old are they? What do they wear? What do they like to do on the weekend?

The more detail you give the persona, the easier it is to talk to this person.

You may discover that you have more than one type of person you want to market to. Great! Create a persona for each one.

Then, when you sit down to write an article... decide who you're writing to for that article. And then have a conversation with that person. Your personality will shine through and you will earn your visitors' trust.

Take this simple action and apply it today to your article marketing strategy. You'll drive more traffic, get more leads... and ultimately make more sales.
