Samsung Galaxy S4 Specs Talk Ahead Of US Release Date

Samsung Galaxy S4 Specs Talk Ahead Of US Release Date

Since the Samsung Galaxy S4 has already seen the light of day, now?s the perfect time to talk about its hardware and boy, does its spec sheet look impressive.

Article written by Kevin Go???Aligning with previous leaks, the Samsung S4, or the so-called ?new Galaxy? by Samsung?s marketing play, features a display that?s non other than the full high-definition Super AMOLED display which not only trumps that of the Galaxy S3?s in terms of pixel density, but also in the way it shows blacks ? not to mention, the improved power draw.

The processor hiding underneath its hood is the much-awaited Exynos 5410 [Aka. Exynos 5 Octa] which sports a ?four-by-four? CPU configuration and paired with two gigabytes of (DDR3?) RAM, simply put, it packs four Cortex-A15 cores for high-performance computing and another four Cortex-A7 cores which are used for performing simple tasks such as reading texts, performing calls, etc.

samsung-galaxy-s4-life-companionThe main camera has been bumped to 13 megapixels from the previous 8 megapixel shooter, there?s also a front-facing video chat camera that can work in tandem with the main unit to capture photos when the Dual Camera function is used which will let users capture?Dual Shot images and Dual Recordings. There?s also the aptly named ?Dual Video Call? which can be quite useful on apps such as Skype.

On the software side, the Galaxy S4 sports the latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system that?s been blanketed by the slightly upgraded TouchWiz user interface. A ton of apps such have been added too, there?s?Air View, floating touch controls, Smart Pause, WATCH ON remote control app (the Galaxy S4 has a built-in IR blaster), Optical Reader (for scanning business cards and the likes), S-Translator and many more.

Air View, floating touch and Smart Pause caught our attention the most,?Galaxy S4 takes advantage of the front camera to determine of you?re looking at your phone or not, it will then pause or resume the video you?re watching accordingly. Air View lets users control certain apps in the phone such as the web browser, this enables the user to shift from one web page to another with jsut a swipe on the front of the phone ? pretty nifty when your hands are dirty. Floating touch can let you preview details about images or text messages just by hovering your finger on top of it.

Software?functions?aside, we would like to highlight one major fact about the Galaxy S4?s processor, the term ?octa? implies that all the eight execution cores inside the Galaxy S4 can be activated simultaneously ? this can be quite misleading.

The truth is, it has a ?four by four? configuration (as some of you probably already know), the principle behind it works the same way Nvidia?s ?Companion Core? inside the Tegra 3 and Tegra 4 chips do ? albeit, with a higher core count so don?t expect an overkill performance from the Galaxy S4.

Regardless of the core count, the Exynos 5410 is still expected to perform on-par with the Tegra 4 ? if not a bit slower (as indicated by benchmark scores of both SoCs found online), why? Well, if the user runs an adequately demanding application, two or more Cortex-A15 cores will spring into action to prevent slow-downs, the neighboring Cortex-A7 cores will all be shut down for the best thermal and power efficiency.

All those goodies will be powered by a 2,600mAh battery which is not exactly impressive by today?s standards, the Galaxy S4?s display is deemed to be 25 per cent more efficient than existing AMOLED displays but putting its panel size and pixel count into consideration ? add to that the power-hungry Exynos 5410 chip, we?re betting that it?s battery life is not gonna be shockingly impressive. Expect an average to slightly better runtime compared to existing high-end Android smartphones.

For the release date, Samsung has no word to share just yet but keep in mind that all carriers in United States and 100+ more overseas have opted to offer the new Galaxy, and rumor has it that by the end of April, the device will join the US market with a competitive price.

The new Samsung handset will compete with HTC One which offers a unibody aluminum build.
